Deborah Siegel

Deborah Siegel, Mordine & Company dancer, 1979-1988

My current artistic life is in flux. Before I left the Dance Center in 2003, I had been doing a lot of improvisational dance performance, both with my company, Iris, and solo. I had gotten into using text and telling stories with my movement improv and wanted to know more about the story part, so I started taking classes in the Fiction Writing Department at Columbia. I ended up going through the entire MFA in Creative Writing: Fiction program, which I completed in May 2008. My thesis is a full-length novel, which has potential but needs more rewrites. Right now I am spending all my creative writing energy on persuasive cover letters because I desperately need a job. (My oldest kid starts college in the fall!) Sometimes, when I roll up the rug and do my little dance workout in our bedroom, I fantasize about teaching a movement class called "Baby Boomer Boogie", and another class that combines journal writing with movement. We'll see what comes next...
